I was raised by an ultra-strict father, who loved us so dearly but wouldn't repeat an instruction without consequences. I guess the little boy’s response triggered something from my childhood, perhaps my pride, or the sheer audacity to misbehave and then refuse punishment.

I Understand You

As a parent, I know we mean well with these traditional responses, however beneath the veneer of constant challenges, we communicate to the child their feelings and emotions are illegitimate

Dangers of Yelling at Your Children

Children who are yelled at are controlled by an external locus or force. Once that force is removed, ie. They go to school or church they are set free to misbehave which calls for more yelling, followed by more misconduct; and a vicious cycle is set in place.

Charles Stanley, the famous American Bible teacher took the bedtime routine a step further. His son Andy, recalls his father kneeling on the floor in his room praying for him and his siblings. After prayer, Charles Stanley will rest his hand on young Andy and with a deep, soft southern accent, say "Andy you are going to be a great person in future!"
